Try to install modules independently.
You can see which exist by doing:
$ apt-cache show kde|grep Depends
Depends: kde-core, kde-amusements, kdeaddons, kdeadmin, kdeartwork,
kdegraphics, kdemultimedia, kdenetwork, kdepim, kdeutils, kdewebdev
They're metapackages. Which means empty packages,

I’ve tried to install Debian a few weeks ago –
I actually hadn’t use it for a few years I must confess :P and I
wanted to install kde on it.
I’m using a testing distribution, and I tried a
simple
apt-get install kde
But I got a error message saying kdegraphics

We use an FAI installation of sarge, selecting our own packages.
We have about 200 computers running sarge, used by our students.
