"dropouts" when playing multimedia

Hello, I am using KDE 3.3.2 on Debian Sid. Recently the following problem has cropped up. Whenever playing back multimedia (audio and/or video) there are brief pauses. This happens with XMMS, and also Xine. There is no problem if I use the Gnome desktop. I guess I will be switching to Gnome

smb:// with wrong character set

Hi! I have display charset = ISO-8859-2 unix charset = ISO-8859-2 in my /etc/samba/smb.conf, and if I mount my shares with mount -t smbfs, the file names are correct. But if I view my shares with the smb:/ kio (ie. with konqueror) then my foreign characters doesn't get displayed, I get underline

The exact line which seems to have posed problem was export DISPLAY=john:0.0 in .bash_profile. I'm a bit stumped as to why that is troublesome, though I guess it must conflict with the env var set by X (which is just 0:0). I think I added that line when I had XDMCP enabled and was doing stuff on a
