I just tried the same thing with the same results.
As a normal user..
I used "su" to become root, then tried again.
It worked fine. Not sure why, I guess I might need to investigate that
a little bit.
I know it will work if you run it as root, but I know there has to be a
better way.

Simple, but this worked for me:
- startup the kde mixer "kmix"
- check which output devices are activated (master, pcm, ..)
