Just one more fnding regarding this topic:
On my other computer with debian stable the Shredder GUI with Gnome and the
Adwaita theme works fine. But it does not work with debian testing.

That may be a bug in the JRE, or an issue in the Shredder Chess code
that makes assumptions that aren't always true in some L&F.
I doubt Oracle puts a lot of support behind the Gnome L&F for Swing, so
I sugg
In the meantime I can confirm that some of the themes in GNOME also solve the
issue. Among them is Unity, Simple, Mist, Bluebird and Albatross. For the rest
of the them the Shredder GUI is broken.
How can that be? Who can fix that?

Looking at the stacktrace it seems the com.shredderchess.gui.f.o.d
method attempts to create a BufferedImage with a null size (I suggest
disabling the obfuscation, that would make the debugging easier).
Did you try with another look and feel like Metal? That may be an issue

since years I had an issue with the GUI display of Shredder Chess 12 on GNOME
desktop: The "Option" dialog is not displayed properly. All elements are
somehow hidden and only become visible when I move over it with the mouse
pointer. The elements seem also to be displaced. This makes
