/etc/profile but I added it to /etc/default/tomcat4 as well.
I'll try and downgrade to j2sdk1.3 and see if that does the same.

looked and tcpip_socket=1 is there. I also checked my pg_hba.conf and
I have these lines:
local ident sameuser
hostall 127.0.0.1 255.255.255.0 ident
This is also my setup on OS X.
