I just had this problem the other day. The resolution is to do
apt-get install libstdc++2.9-glibc2.1
And then you should be all set. Basically, it is an old version of the
library that needs to be in place.

I did it by hand without using the rpm stuff (alien scares me a bit). It
worked fine after downloading the right version of libstdc++ as well.
