I'm trying to get mpkg-j2sdk (v 1.9.21) to build a debian package out
of the IBM 1.4 JDK. I've created .deb with it and installed using
dpkg --install, but AFAICT the new IBM JDK doesn't like being
redirected via /etc/alternatives. As you can see below, with one
level of symlink redirection, thin

Well, I don't do much with ports but I had this number
5000 stuck in my mind without being sure whether it was
correct or where I'd got it from. So

They indeed to start at 1024, no doubt. But the Debian Java policy says that an
application is not allowed to do anything possibly harmful by default, therefore

I get "connection refused" when i initialise the app on my debian
system. It works fine on windows machines.

I've got maybe a strange error while installing and using sun
J2skd1.4.1_02 following the instructions posted into this ML (sorry, I
cannot find references...), only I downloaded a PDF named
"debianjava.pdf" following a link posted here.
The steps are:
