Error running blackdown j2re / j2sdk 1.3

I've just installed the latest blackdown debs on woody.  When I run /usr/lib/j2se/1.3/bin/java -version I get the following error output.  Does anyone know what's going on?  It sounds like most other people aren't having any such problems.   output: --- Unexpected Sig
