Yes please!
2.2.9 has been in beta for months and like Debian will be released 'when
its ready'. It does offer some cool features that 2.2.8 doesn't have.
I'm a java developer and have no experience building .debs but I'm
willing to help out if I can - e.g. testing.

If you look in two places - at #163197 (which says about conflicting
files, like /usr/include/jni.h, and for ex. at output of:
apt-cache show libgcj3-dev
The Conflicts: line is here interesting:
Conflicts: libgcj0, libgcj0-dev, libgcj300-dev, libgcj2-dev
Bzzz... IMO it asks for virtual conf
