I no longer program in Java and I'm quite dissatisfied by the Java
situation in the free software world, anyway.
Someone who follows the XML/Java world should check it this package is
still sensible.
No important bugs filled in.

Ok, as Ola suggested I read the README.Debian a litle more carefully
and also followed Jeff Licquia's advice re Batik -
however after all the setup below I get still get this.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~] 5 $ sh -x bin/fop.sh
+ Js=/usr/share/java
+ export
CLASSPATH
