syslog.conf don't work as a filter (check line for line, stop at first match)
like iptables or sisco accesslists do.
If you stil got the default catch all ine:
*.*;auth,authpriv.none -/var/log/syslog
in syslog.conf, the messsages goes there too.

Both ntop <http://www.ntop.org/ntop.html>
and iptraf <http://iptraf.seul.org/> should do this.
iptraf is lighter on resources, and offer realtime monitoring,
ntop is accessed trough an browser, and offers extensive graphs of
traffic.
It all depends on how low-end this box is.
