Oops I figured out the problem.
There was a script being called from the .bashrc file that was not functioning
properly.
Commenting the script out fixed the problem.

porcesses and load. Everything works fine except one machine sends this
error once each hour on the half-hour. All other (identical) machines
hum along happily.
