However, missing the occasional variable is a fairly common error: I
gather msgfmt isn't picking these out for us during normal checks.
Can it do so? If not, how do we check for such errors?

Yes, that one is OK and should not be corrected ?
Anyway, you can't correct missing vars as you don't really know where
to put the missing var in the translated sentence.
