Ah, sorry, it seems that that case won't work indeed. Nor
DB (I've tried GDB 13.1 from
Fedora and 10.1 from Debian bullseye) just doesn't "see" the (DWARF?)
debuginfo in the .debug files extracted from the dbgsym debs. This
applies to both hurd-amd64 and hurd-i386 now.

As Devuan GNU+Linux is a fork of Debian without systemd, I suppose it
can be an easier base to work that current Debian GNU/Hurd:

I've booted debian-hurd-2017-i386-DVD-1.iso and selected the "Text
install" boot option, but after some other boot messages only shows and
repeats this line forever:
Cannot make directory '/run/screen': No such file or directory

grub-install in this situation.
I don't know if Debian-live-Linux can damage installation with same action.
