(like your GRUB configuration). Is this the first start ever,
if so, did you take a look on the FAQ's and the install guide?
Did the system spend you some error messages, post them here.

Hmmm. Maybe it was the = character? I always see it in examples, but I
don't use it in my configs. I always thought it was optional.

ok, so i: dpkg --force-depends --purge grub; apt-get clean; apt-get install grub
thining that it would solve my problem. then on whim i changed around
some menu.lst stuff:
