You don't have to gunzip anything. Leave it as is.

By now, I have solved the problem by myself: My hda is 2.4 GB, but the VMware
virtual bios can only handle up to 2 GB. Running from a virtual disk works
fine. Once I have the network working fully, I will have a very comfortable
environment for playing with the hurd. If anybody is interested, I can

I am about to install Debian Linux on an old 486. I am also
interested in creating a partition for HURD. What are the
steps I should be taking to install the two operating
systems? Can I use lilo to choose between Linux and HURD
or do I use GRUB? What should I be looking out for?
