quite often I just want to disable a service in /etc/init.d. But there
doesn't seem to be a standard way to do that.
Many services have a file in /etc/defaults, where the service can be
disabled. In that case, however, the service also can't be started
manually.

I usually put "exit 0" near the top of the init script. The symlink
stuff is far too brittle.

apache2 depends on libaprutil1 which depends on libmysqlclient15off which
depends on mysql-common.
This problem will be solved in Lenny+1 by splitting up libaprutil1 into
libaprutil1-{dbd-{mysql,pgsql,sqlite3},ldap}.
