This is my personal policy:
Currently, I am distributing CD-writables, not mass-produced CDs. Because
these cost a lot more than the mass-produced CD. I will make one for any
contributor at my cost for the media and mailing. I'd probably go broke
quickly if I did not ask for that, as I am about $4

Thanks for the comments on doc, guys. I think I will package the old 'doc' as
`doclinux' and create a new `docdebian' with Debian specific documentation,
especially as Ian M. promised the manual for today :-)
(As an aside: doclinux and docdebian or rather doc-linux and doc-debian ?)

Maybe we should try a different site. Please check if you get a

Package: (base)
Version: 0.93R6
When doing a new installation, the base system unaccoutably tried to
use /dev/sda1 as a swap partition. We had not specified /dev/sda1 as
a swap partition, but its type was listed as Linux Swap in the
partition table. I think a bit more checking would be appropria

Good question.
I've verified this under debian 0.93
Package: knews
Version: 0.9.3-1
We installed knews, and it prompted us about the news server, despite
the fact that we'd already told inewsinn's postinst where to find it
(and it had set up /etc/news/inn.conf and /etc/news/server). It
should read (and write, if necessary) /etc/news/server.
Ian.
Package: f2c
Version: 951007-2
f2c's postinst script ran ldconfig with the -v option, producing a lot
of alarming-looking output.
Ian.
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.0.5
The Perl package sometimes produces a message about not having the
kernel headers installed, and having to run perlconfig later.
(a) This should be handled differently if the kernel source or headers
are to be installed: dpkg should defer configuring Perl if possible.
Package: tgif
Version: 2.16pl12-0
We installed tgif, and it prompted us about the paper size, despite
the fact that we'd already told another program. It should use
/etc/papersize.
Ian.
Package: snmp
Version: 2.1.2l3-1
The snmp package installs a file in /etc/init.d, which runs
start-stop-daemon --start --verbose --oknodo --exec /usr/sbin/snmpd &

starting snmpd during the installation of the next package.

Package: samba
Version: 1.9.14-1
We removed a newly-installed samba package, and it left an `nmbd' or
some such process running, which appeared to be a child of the
correctly-killed `smbd'. A SIGTERM fixed it.
Ian.
Package: snmp
Version: 2.1.2l3-1
We removed a newly-installed snmp package, and it left an snmpd
running. We tried killing it with SIGTERMs, but it appeared to ignore
them. A SIGKILL fixed it.
Ian.
Package: includes
Version: 1.2.13-5
(a) The `includes' packages creates /usr/doc/includes/COPYRIGHT in the
postinst. This is wrong.
(b) It doesn't remove it in the {pre, post}{inst,rm}, so dpkg complains
about being unable to remove the empty /usr/doc/includes directory.
Ian.
Package: texbin
Version: 3.1415-4
texbin failed to configure properly, with dpkg telling us that the
postinst had exited with an error status of 1. There were no other
useful messages. Oddly, a reinstall worked.
There are two bugs here:
(a) whatever caused the problem in the first place.
(b) th
Package: bind
Version: 4.9.3-BETA24-1
We installed bind on a fresh system. We configured the nameserver and
wanted to start it, and tried `ndc start'. It complained about
/var/run/named.pid not existing. We tried /etc/init.d/bind start, and
nothing happened. On closer inspection, the `bind' sc
Package: ppp
Version: 2.2-1
We installed and then removed/purged ppp, and were left with a
nonexmpty /etc/ppp directory.
dpkg --purge should remove configuration files. (The postinst gets
"purge" as $1 in this situation.)
Ian.
Package: netstd
Version: 1.21-1
We used `/etc/init.d/netstd_nfs reload' to try to get the nfsd to read
a new exports file, but this appeared to kill the mountd. We
restarted it by using `netstd_nfs start' and it appeared to work.
Ian.
There is an official Debian CD - the one that FSF is issuing.
I've offered to let FSF copy my master CD - it's not clear if they
will need to do this or not.

Must be a throwback to the old dpkg not handling symlinks. I'll fix
it when I build the kernel.
