Which is why I ask if it would not be appropriate as a Debian package. I
am not a security expert, but OTOH people that want this functionality
will manually patch anyway. My question is, is it appropriate to make it
easier for them by creating a Debian package?

things but that doesn't mean we have to patch mutt for their sakes.
Naturally, it's up to the package maintainer how to differ from
upstream, but this mutt user would be miffed.
