Autobuilding non-free packages?

Is the system described in: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2006/11/msg00012.html still in place? Or is it currently necessary to manually build non-free packages on their supported platforms? (Or is there some other system now in place that replaces that one?) -- Russ Allbe
