You might want to use xcin for zh_TW locale. But simplified Chinese
is more common online these days.
I tried both and found chinput more convenient featurewise. My
Chinese class uses traditional Chinese, and I'm going to work with
Classical Chinese, for which I guess I'll need traditional

Make sure you use a recent XFree86 and the xterm that comes with
it should be fine. If you run it in a Unicode locale (like
zh_TW.UTF-8), xterm will recognise that and enable multibyte
support

I am using chinput 3.0.2 in Debian testing and experience the
following problems:
1. Chinput does not play nice with xterm. When I open an xterm
with chinput running in the background, xterm and chinput
together will consume ca. 20% CPU time doing nothing at
all.
