imagine Ctrl+Alt+Backspace doesn't bring back the console too.
But with a dual-head setup Ctrl+Alt+Backspace works and X can be killed.

You can fix this by adding like that in your /etc/apt/apt.conf file:

Just an update here: the bug does not seem to be in evince itself,
this was just a handy way to trigger it. Something broke after my
upgrade yesterday, and I'm currently trying to isolate which package

this error occurs because of changed preprocessor output in gcc-4.2. The
attached patch fixes conf/lib/mkdepend.sh to handle it. With this patch
applied smail doesn't FTBFS on my (amd64) box anymore.
