I had the same issue with hanging dpkg as well on my VM. However: on i386, not
amd64, and I did not remove/purge any packages before. Also, I used aptitude
safe-upgrade (instead of apt-get).
After quite some time I killed the hanging dpkg process (which used 100% CPU)
and apitude cont

# apt-get remove --purge x11-common libx11-6 libx11-data
then
# apt-get update
# apt-get dist-upgrade
and got the same result as my first run.
On a *second* run I did not do that purge up-fro

Doing and upgrade in a VM. Started from a fairly minimal wheezy
system, then ran apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade to do the
