I did what you mentioned below. The results are:
Xserver works after aticonfig, if fglrx kernel module is not loaded.
Xserver doesn't work, if the kernel module is loaded. Instead, the
system hangs completly, leaving me with a black screen, no more terminal

what happens if you do the following e.g. (as root):
mv /etc/X11/xorg.comf /etc/X11/xorg.comf.backup
rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf
aticonfig --initial --force

If the kernel-module is loaded, the x-server doesn't start up.
