I traced it back to texlive-binaries by looking the logfile at the fmutils stage. The issue seems to originate from the recent migration from zlib 1.2.13 to zlib 1.3. For short, the following command-line $ luatex -ini -jobname=luatex -progname=luatex luatex.ini gives PANIC: unprotected error in call to Lua API (zlib library version does not match - header: 1.2.13, library: 1.3) aborted
