It is the chroot.
If I mount -t tmpfs tmpfs /dev/shm inside it, then it works much better,
/Seriously/ needs a better error message!

Just an addendum that once the partition is actually mounted using the
straced cryptsetup, everything seems to work ok, I can't get
corruption.
