It may be relevant that I installed the Japanese IM a few months ago
following these instructions:

Now I uninstalled all the relevant packages and reinstalled them. The
reinstallation put back libuiminputcontextplugin.so and

Duh, I obviously meant Debian :)
I reinstalled the official QT version and deleted libuiminputcontextplugin
-- and the infinite loop disappeared. So I can confirm that

I downloaded the "virgin" QT source tarball from Trolltech and rebuilt it
locally. Then I replaced the libraries in /usr/lib with the ones I built.
With the new libraries the problem disappeared. I suspect some Ubuntu
customization is to blame.
I don't have a .XCompose, but I'm experiencing the same problem after
upgrading to Ubuntu Intrepid, qt4 version 4.4.3-0ubuntu1.
My infinite loop has this:
