After upgrading to the new Icedove and restarting, my address book
is still empty, yet the data is still in my book.ab file.

I'm currently suffering from this bug as well. If it's any comfort
to you, your address book isn't lost. You can still get information
from ~/.mozilla-thunderbird/*.default/abook.mab
