After filing this bug report I discovered a workaround for my case described above, on current squeeze 1. Fail and remove the raid member with the UUID issue (.. mdadm /dev/md0 -r /dev/sdb1) 2. Overwrite the partition with random data (dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sdb1 ..) 3. Re-add the raid membe
