I further investigated this error and it seems it has to do with my
system already using the new directory structure, where /lib is
symlinked to /usr/lib and your packages tries to place an aditional
symlink in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng12.so.0 which would then link

I would blame xorg for breaking compatibility. It is an excellent
example of open source projects placing unnecessary obstacles in their
own way. I don't think there really was a reason for this. It is just
because some developer thought something would be more perfectly handled
in another way
This again sheds a bad light on the quality of debian and its
security/testing procedures. In quiet commemoration of the OpenSSL bug...
