After trying several combinations, I found that if I held kwin at 4:3.5.4-2+b1 and upgraded other kde packages to the version 4:3.5.5-1 present in unstable (holding kdebase at 4:3.5.4-2 but upgrading all the packages required by kdebase except kwin to 4:3.5.5-1), the flashing problem is gone.
