I checked this problem on porterbox.
gcc-4.3 work fine.
I was able to reproduce this promlem on gcc-4.4 with -DNDEBUG option.
I think that this is a regression bug of gcc.

I can confirm that this problem, and workaround, happens with the HUAWEI E160 3G
modem too.
The version from unstable repository ppp-2.4.5-4 breaks network-manager-pppt
dependencies, but at least the 3G connection is stablished.
