The segfault I hit was due to incorrect error handling in sane. When that is
fixed, I get a scanner error "incorrect window". I have no idea where it
comes from (perhaps the scanner itself), grep doesn't find the message in the
source (neither in the module, nor in sane).

Looking into this bug more, it looked like a simple build-dep on
libpopt-dev would make all the difference. That fixes the issue here,
but it then goes on further to fail building drivers:
