problem is in incorrect error handling.
Attached patch adds realpath and strdup error handling for journal dir
option.
Why journal dir was not created in first place, is different story
(probably bug in postinst script)

It looks that grub-probe have many errors reported, and maybe one of them
is similar to mine, but I cannot find exactly same problem reported.
I have simple configuration with single disk /dev/sda,
and 2 partitions /dev/sda1 (ext3) an
and uuid of the root and swap partitions.
This informations are used by update-grub Debian script and passed to
Linux kernel using root= and resume= kernel parameters on boot. Grub
doesn't need to interprete or read them in any way or access them in any
way on boot.

I can confirm this is unrelated to libc6-udeb issues.
I am able to go past choose-mirror on strech alpha 7 netboot.iso (however
it fails with libc6-udeb 2.23-4 , and a segfault in 'sh' much later in the
install process after retriving installer
