The attached patch for /etc/vim/vimrc solves the problem not using
system() at all to read /etc/papersize. It is applied in the pkg-vim svn

It's a bug in debian/rules, you can just set SHELL=/bin/bash to force
make to use bash as its shell, see attached patch for the needed change.
The bug is now fixed, it will be included in the next vim upload.
