hi, sorry to bother again.
setting environment variables in "/etc/profile" and in
"/etc/environment" does help, but does not resolve everything. people
still cannot login using kdm/xdm/gdm.

i encountered the same problems. have been using the pam-ldap,
libnss-ldap for a year now without problems until that named update last
week.
i am certain this is not connected to any window-manager. the sessions
cannot be create
try to install nscd this solved the name-resolution problems for me.
(and it makes things faster, too)
