I needed to get this sorted out, so I had a couple of hours and re-installed
the box, then applied exactly the same set of packages with precisely the same
configuration ( /etc was restored ) - and the result is that the system is now
fully operational, even with exactly the same kernel. E

I've tried a number of servers and got the same results, however the
traceroute to www.uk.debian.org times out as follows :
traceroute www.uk.debian.org
traceroute to debian.hands.com (83.142.228.128), 30 hops max, 40 byte
packets
1 host-83-146-18-14.bulldogdsl.com (83.146.18.14) 50.965 m
OK, I compiled up a fresh kernel, 2.6.28.7, straight from linus' tree. I
explicitly disabled all the selinux and associated security subsystems, and I
have exactly the same behaviour with the 2.9 libc.
I'll keep poking at this and see if there is anything I can come up with -

I'm running a vanilla kernel, 2.6.28.2, but selinux is certainly enabled. Would
you like me to try with selinux disabled?

OK, tried rebooting with selinux=0 and I'm afraid it made no difference. When I
get a chance I'll try compiling up the kernel again, and also have a look at a
later revision and completely disable selinux.
Oh well, back to 2.7 a
