I think I finally fixed the problem by installing the apmd package. :-\
The problem was, I am guessing, that the hard drive went to sleep at
some random time (despite it being explicitly told not to in the BIOS)
and regardless of the disk activity (so even my 15 min dd cronjob did

The initial DMA error messages appear now and again, and seem to be
harmless (but also PM related) then it all goes wrong after a few weeks

libnss-mdns depends on avahi-daemon and avahi-daemon in turn recommends
libnss-mdns. Default aptitude settings mean that this will keep avahi-daemon
installed even if all other dependencies on it are removed.

Sorry for the vague title - I am not familiar with any PDF terminology, or how
PDFs are generated.
When I generate PDFs using CUPS-PDF I am not able to select text when viewing
the PDF (with Evince in this case).
Contrast that with

I am having a problem writing to a LUKS-encrypted VFAT partition on my USB
flash drive.
The drive mounts OK, but the permissions on the mount directory don't appear to
be correct - the user is set to "root".
