I found an older bug in apt (#465572) that might be related. One of
the workarounds suggested was to set Acquire::http::Pipeline-Depth to
a large value (like 1) in apt.conf, or on the apt-get command line
with -O. Can you see if that makes the error go away?

(add a "$debug true" line to /etc/approx/approx.conf),
and then send me the relevant part of the log (in /var/log/daemon.log

Sorry, I should have noticed sooner that you're running the version
from wheezy. Can you try installing the version from wheezy-backports:
https://packages.debian.org/wheezy-backports/approx
and see if that works better?
