Yes, this problem is definitely KFreeBSD-specific. Cupt calls mkdir('/')
and expects EEXIST but get EISDIR [1]. This is not allowed by POSIX [2]
so I believe this is a bug in kfreebsd kernels.

Dear Maintainer,
I’ve prepared an NMU for pfstools which fixes #604368 (Qt3->Qt4
transition), #666959 (Octave 3.2->3.6 transition) and the Lintian error
about obsolete dpatch. The NMU relies on the new upstream release 1.8.5
(which fixes the Qt issue).

I did not see a “confirmed” tag on the bug report, so I’m not sure if
you are still looking for more reports that this is systemd related: I
just restarted into systemd and sudo fails to start with return value
143 as well.

reliably use the command line options as documented in the manpage. This
might also fix #650043.
