Here's some additional information. The resulting .mpg files all seem to
play OK, and do not seem to be truncated.
I tried transcoding another .mkv file to mpg, and a similar failure occurred.
But ffmpeg produced much more debugging info this time:

After re-reading the bug logs, I am convinced that this bug belongs to
xine-lib for not calling InitializeMagick() before NewMagickWand().
Moreover, xine-lib 1.1.20 does that, and I can no longer reproduce the
crashes with it.

I also have observed that iceweasel, i.e. firefox-bin, dynamically loads
libgnutls.so.26.21.8 on my system. But iceweasel does not depend on or recommend
libgnutls26.
