Just to add a precision that was not noted previously: the problem is
not directly related to sleep but to the "removal" of the battery.
Indeed extra spaces are also added when the battery is physically
removed (1 extra space) and then reinserted (1 more extra space).

This bug really is in gcc-4.6, because it is currently the default sid
gcc and it is used to (mis)compile src/build/genrecog.c during
gcc-avr build, which later crashes. I'm fairly certain that this is
