The failure to build is caused by the -pic flag that's added in the
debian/rules file to the LDFLAGS. This flag doesn't seem to have ever
existed, but it was ignored in the past and it now creates a failure to

I tested the alternate you suggest. For me it doesn't work. I get "operation
not handled". I do validate, but so I get the "Open" bdialog, but Open doesn't
work when I enter evolution-backup.tar.gz. The filenames list stays empty. So,
compiled a fresh package from ubuntu ppa source and that did the trick
for me.
