I do not know anything about udev apart from the fact that this is
the one which is responsible for seeing all and any external devices

I encountered the same problem with a much more clear system.
I have no initrd kernel as my / is on a md device. However, with the new
udev this device gets mounted without problem but the rest of my system
that is on LVM (/usr, /var, ...) c
