I tried to further locate when the bug appears. As it turned out the
command line ftp client does not cause the kernel panic, neither in
passive nor in standard mode. I also ran the ftpsync Perl script without
problems.

Post the 'pvs -v' output and 'lvm version'.
Try the failing lvcreate with '-' arg and grep for the deptree lines and
look for 'Adding target'.

That's a GREAT question. The really weird thing is that the RAID array in
question *does* actually have 3.2 TB of free space in it! (5 x 750GB SATA
