I just tried both usplash and splashy in virtualbox running Lenny up to date.
They both worked fine.
With splashy I used vga=792 splash 792 as kernel boot parameters
With usplash, just vga=792
I then tested usplash in a KDE4 box (my box), and it also worked fine out of
the box.
