I have the same (or similar) issue. But for me. not only the screen is
currupted, the whole machine freezes. (I tried to ssh onto it from
another host) This occurs at probably 5 to 10 % of all switches to VT.
And it also occured once when I wanted to logout from KDE.

I noticed that this segfault does not happen on all architectures. On
Etch i386 (1.5.13-1.1) it segfaults, but on Etch amd64 (1.5.13-1.1) it
does not segfault.

Well, you asked aptitude to upgrade that package, but its dpkg
database entry appears to be corrupted in a bad way. There's no way for
aptitude to find out which package broke (short of something horrible
and error-prone, like parsing the dpkg output), so it has to assume that
everything it was
