I've tested with a vanilla kernel 2.6.21 and still have problems with
the USB external disks. So I've logged a bug in buzilla:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8692
I'll keep debian BTS posted in case of progress upstream.

I trieed Eddy's current debs, and they work great. I see there might be
