I think I sorted my system and it now works.
Problem was caused by linux .so heck (not as bad as MS's DLL hell).
I seem to have a stray libXrender.so (and other libs like the likely
named libXcursor.so but this one is common with ldd on sawfish) in
/usr/X11R6/lib which overshadowed the newer one
