I downgraded to 2.2.3-4 and my fonts look OK again when I enable the autohinter. You can see an example in the attached png. The top text is with 2.2.3 and the bottom with 2.3.1. There the fonts look bad and if I change to one of the other option like bytecode interpreter nothing seems to happen
